Everything No-One Tells You About Having A Baby,
and How to Ace It As A Family
The early years of parenting are shaped by two things above all else: what’s happening in your baby’s brain and nervous system, and what’s happening in yours! NeuroNest is a neuroscience-informed short course for expectant and new parents, based on the simple idea that a family is an ecosystem which only really thrives when everyone in it is thriving.
Created by an early childhood development expert and couples’ counsellor, the programme distils best-practice research across relational and developmental psychology, learning science, and neuroscience to provide family-friendly information, skills, and tools that will equip your family to thrive.
The classes are packed with practical tips and facilitated in a warm, judgement-free space, with opportunities to laugh, play, and build the friendships that can form an indispensable part of your support system as parents.
“Long before a child can settle themselves, they settle by watching you settle.”
We’ll explore how your baby’s brain develops from before birth through the first 24 months, including how everyday experiences wire and shape it, how play is doing far more than it looks, and how your own calm becomes the thing your baby borrows to build their stress-response system.
Long before a child can settle themselves, they settle by watching and feeling you settle. We’ll show you simple, fun techniques to manage your everyday stress while simultaneously modelling how to, so your baby begins developing self-regulation by natural imitation before those ‘terrible twos’!
We’ll also explore what’s happening to each of you, the parents, creating a map to the unanticipated aspects of this life stage so they don’t detract from the joy.
We’ll cover typical couple and parenting ‘potholes’ that follow the birth of a baby, including the profound changes pregnancy and birth make to the maternal brain, how to recognise and address post-natal depression, and navigating the intimacy, identity and relationship shifts new parents experience and the strain these place on even the strongest relationships. You’ll leave knowing how to recognise and manage these to ensure your relationship emerges deeper and stronger than ever.
Lastly we’ll look at your hopes and fears for your child, handling mistakes, mindset, and the value of authenticity. We define “good enough” parenting, and explain why it beats “perfect” parenting every time. We also provide practical strategies to use your own mistakes for learning and healing in a process that will help your baby develop the attachment security and resilience to handle the big feelings little humans experience as they discover the world.
Participants in the next cohort will also receive priority access to Illumin-Ed’s Key-Transition-Point Family Wellness programme throughout their journey as a couple and as parents.
NeuroNest is a neuroscience-informed short course from Illumin-Ed Institute for expectant and new parents. It covers both your baby’s developing brain, from before birth through the first two years, and the changes happening in your own brain as a parent, with honest conversation and genuinely practical tools.
NeuroNest is for expectant and new parents, both partners, who want to understand the neuroscience of early parenthood. It suits anyone navigating pregnancy, birth, and the first two years, whether it’s a first child or not, and treats the whole family as an ecosystem that thrives together.
NeuroNest covers how a baby’s brain develops and how everyday connection shapes it, how stress and co-regulation work, what play does, and the parent’s own experience: the remodelled parental brain, identity shifts, relationship strain, and perinatal mental health, plus practical ‘good enough’ parenting tools.
The next NeuroNest cohort is launching soon, subject to numbers. To join or register interest, book a discovery call or enquire through the Illumin-Ed website.
