I'm the parent of teenagers and young adults, and I share a concern I'm sure other parents of similarly aged children have: how do we prepare them for a future defined by disruptive technologies, in which current jobs become redundant and new roles rise and fall faster than we've seen in recorded human history?
Reading LinkedIn over the last two years has been worrying from that perspective. There are hundreds of posts along the lines of "Finally, after over 300 applications, I'm glad to announce I'm starting a new role." Look a little further and you find seasoned professionals applying for entry-level jobs, and internships that require two to five years of experience, which young people are supposed to have acquired where, and when, exactly?
I don't want my children stuck submitting thousands of applications, being laid off repeatedly, always reacting to shifting circumstances and market forces. I want them to recognise the immense opportunities that come with a period of change more intense than anything since the industrial revolution, and to use those opportunities to define the market rather than be defined by it. That requires a kind of preparation western education doesn't currently provide, and building it is what Illumin-Ed exists to do.

The World Economic Forum's projections place analytical thinking, creative reasoning and self-regulation among the fastest-growing skill demands through 2030. The pattern is consistent: technical skills become obsolete faster than human ones, and the gap between them widens with every iteration of AI capability.
What that means in practice is that a young person entering the workforce in the next five years will compete on how well they think under conditions of ambiguity, how quickly they rebuild and redirect after setbacks, and how effectively they can work with and through other people. These are neurologically-based capacities, and they are built during a window that is open right now.

The prefrontal cortex, which governs planning, self-regulation, impulse control and complex decision-making, doesn't reach full maturity until the mid-to-late twenties. The circuits carrying executive function are among the last to develop, and they continue to be refined well into the third decade of life. The OECD's synthesis of brain and learning research puts it plainly: adolescence combines high cognitive horsepower with poor emotional steering. The engine is powerful while the controls are still being installed.
That has a direct implication, and it's one almost nobody tells young people or their parents. The years spent in school, university and early career are also the years when the architecture of the part of the brain that will run the rest of their life is being finalised, and is still open to being shaped deliberately by the person themselves.
This is why Threshold works with 16 to 25 year olds. It's the point where neurological plasticity and real cognitive capacity coincide: old enough to understand what they're building and why it matters to them, young enough that the window is still wide open. It isn't a now-or-never deadline, because the brain stays adaptable for life. It is, though, the period in which deliberate investment returns more than it ever will again.
Threshold applies Human Capacity Architecture®, the framework Illumin-Ed has built by drawing together research from psychology, neuroscience and learning science.
The work runs on two parallel tracks. Adaptive Capacity builds the neurological and psychological foundations everything else depends on: understanding how your own nervous system works and learning to run it deliberately, mapping how your particular brain learns, the resilience to stay functional under pressure, and the developed courage and agency to direct your own path. Cognitive Architecture builds the quality of thinking that tertiary study and a disrupted job market both demand: systems awareness, reasoning and judgement, the integration of head, heart and hand, and the disposition to see possibility where others see constraint.
Adaptive Capacity always runs slightly ahead, because it lays the road the second track runs on. There's a neurological reason for that order. Chronic dysregulation and unmanaged anxiety degrade the prefrontal function that complex thinking depends on, so a young person operating in overwhelm may be underperforming because they're working with a compromised system. No amount of academic support fixes that.

Tutoring builds content knowledge without building the cognitive capacity that produces it. Clinical support addresses psychological symptoms as they arise, without building psychological capacity as a proactive structure. Coaching adds scaffolding to foundations that may not be there yet.
So a young person can reach the threshold of adult life academically strong and outwardly high-functioning, with no working understanding of how their brain handles pressure, regulates attention, builds motivation, or recovers from failure. When the scaffolding of school falls away, there is nothing underneath to replace it.

South Africa's National Benchmark Tests exist precisely because matric results don't predict university success. What the NBTs measure, including academic literacy, quantitative reasoning and the capacity for independent thought, is what we develop.
We know the tertiary landscape intimately: what first-year students actually encounter, where even high achievers come unstuck, and the difference between a young person who is academically qualified and one who is genuinely prepared. That preparation is neuropsychological rather than curricular. It can't be crammed, and it is rarely built alongside content knowledge.

We start by understanding how this particular brain is wired: how they think and feel, where their strengths genuinely lie, what they find hard and why, and what actually motivates them. Support for giftedness, learning challenges, ADHD and neurodivergence is built into the process rather than bolted onto material designed for entirely different minds.
We also work with what a young person is genuinely interested in. Building capacity in service of something they care about works considerably better than building it in the abstract, and it is the difference between a young person doing the work and a young person being made to do it.

All three tiers deliver Human Capacity Architecture. What differs is how much of the work is built around your particular young person, and how much direct access there is to Mick.
Threshold Private is one-to-one work with Micaelan Halse.
It begins with mapping, and the mapping is thorough: up to a full day with the young person, one to two hours with you as parents, and a proper look at academic reports, school context, what they are interested in, and what they are actually motivated to do. It is a conversation long enough to see the whole picture, rather than a questionnaire that samples a corner of it.
What comes out of that is a report built for this particular young person, in which every recommendation arrives with the neuroscience underneath it, so they understand why something works rather than being handed a list of instructions. How much of that science goes in is itself part of the tailoring; some want the mechanisms in full, others want just enough to trust the tools and get on with using them.
Then the work itself, sequenced across Human Capacity Architecture with Adaptive Capacity running slightly ahead of Cognitive Architecture, and built around their own goals rather than a syllabus.
Families who have seen this before will recognise the shape of it: the person you retain to build a young person's capacity across the board, running in parallel with an excellent school rather than in place of one. What gets built is the regulation, judgement and agency that a demanding life asks for later, and that no school has time to teach.

Delivery is then shared: a small group moving through Human Capacity Architecture together, led by Mick, with the individual threads picked up along the way.
It runs in Cape Town and online, so distance doesn't decide whether your child can do this.
A small group also offers something the one-to-one work cannot. Young people discover that the things they had quietly assumed were personal failings are close to universal, and that recognition is very often where the change begins.

Threshold Foundation runs as a workshop series, either as an open cohort or inside a school, led by Mick alongside other members of the Illumin-Ed team and invited guest speakers. The curriculum follows Human Capacity Architecture directly: neurological literacy and what neuroplasticity actually means for agency; mapping how your own brain learns, including where it struggles and what it is genuinely good at; the psychological ground of adolescence, covering self-esteem, identity, belonging, shame, failure and recovery; and then the thinking work, from systems awareness and formal reasoning through to ideation, entrepreneurialism and leadership.
There are no grades and nothing to pass or fail. Young people engage with the material rather than bracing to be tested on it, and that is usually when the useful conversations start.
Every participant also gets access to the online course that sits behind the workshops, so the material stays available to revisit for months afterwards instead of disappearing when the series ends.
